Climate Change Affect on Polar Bears- Millie Annabeth

Updated: Jan 26, 2022

Climate Change is actually a very broad term that refers to the changes in Earth’s climate. And this change does not only take place at the local level but at the global scale. Climate Change has impacted every country, national economies, and also destroyed the ecosystem.

In our school or our society, we all know that it is not only humans that suffer in this change, but it is also animals in particular. Temperatures in the Arctic are rising at least twice as fast as the global average, and sea ice cover is diminishing by nearly 4% per decade. From what we all hear often, polar bears are one of the many animals that suffer from climate change. They rely mostly on the ice sea that provides them access to their primary source of food, which is seals. However, Arctic sea ice is rapidly diminishing due to a warming planet, and the summer season without sea ice has lengthened. The longer the season without sea ice, the longer polar bears are without food.

Polar bears as the biggest carnivore on land will be facing a simple yet threatening situation caused by climate change. And like what has been said before, without sea ice, there is no sea ice ecosystem and losing that ecosystem includes losing polar bears

We’ve all seen the pictures of polar bears stranded on sea ice. They’re all too often used as the iconic poster animals of a rapidly changing climate. Yet every now and again, claims emerge in the media that polar bears' plight might not be so serious after all

In summary, the total number of polar bears worldwide remains uncertain. Compared to 2 or 3 decades ago the impacts of warming on polar bear habitat and feeding are well-understood, scientists are clear that polar bears face a profound threat to their survival in the coming decades.

How to help :
