Factory farming in general is a system of rearing livestock using highly intensive methods, by which poultry, pigs, or cattle are confined indoors under strictly controlled conditions. It is known as a concentrated animal feeding, which is a “modern industrial method of raising animals.”
On large factory farms, a large number of animals are put in small spaces which literally keep those animals indoors for the duration of their lives. The animals are raised to grow faster so they could be turned into products as fast as possible. But that is not all as genetic manipulation could take a form in factory farms. As an example, chickens are often designed to grow bigger breasts as it is the favourite of the consumers. This adds body weight unnaturally and causes a host of debilitating medical conditions as the chicken gets older. Not only to animals, genetic manipulations created a risk to humans as well. A large number of genetically modified animals might allow viruses to spread much faster which in the end potentially become more virulent.
A public perception for sure plays a role since animals are generally not viewed as deserving life beyond their exploitation by humans. The belief is often cultural and can be attributed to a lack of understanding regarding the animal. Despite that, in recent years the public perception and understanding of factory farms and animal sentience is changing in some countries, arriving at a point that is in greater alignment with science.
Lastly awareness isn’t always an action but an action does proves awareness, so here is a few things that you could do to help :
Vote out the factory farming
Protest against permits for factory farms
Stop buying products from companies that don’t care about animal rights
